Professional Development and Training

Outstanding School-Led CPD

EEF Effective Professional Development Guidance Report

Supporting high quality teaching is pivotal in improving children’s outcomes. Indeed, research tells us that high quality teaching can narrow the disadvantage gap. It is therefore hugely encouraging to see a host of new initiatives and reforms that recognise the importance of teacher quality such as the Early Career Framework and the new National Professional Qualifications. These exemplify a growing consensus that promoting effective professional development plays a crucial role in improving classroom practice and pupil outcomes, and this guidance further reflects this, offering recommendations on how to improve professional development and design and select more impactful PD.

This guidance, published 08/10/21, instils a closer focus on mechanisms and provides a new guiding set of principles to ensure that PD is as effective as possible in order to improve pupil outcomes. The full report can be read here.

NQT+1 Development Programme 2021-22

Additional funding for your school to support teachers currently undertaking induction (current NQTs going into their second year)

As part of the education recovery package, the government has committed to provide additional funding to support the development of second-year teachers from September. This information has now been added to the DfE guidance on induction for NQTs.

A detailed breakdown of this funding, the SFET training offer and frequently asked questions can be found here.

Key points at a glance:

  • One off payment to schools during 2021-22 if they currently have an NQT who is due to complete induction this summer
  • Funding is for the equivalent of an additional 5% off timetable for next academic year so these teachers have additional time to invest in their development (equates to 44 hours)
  • This time off timetable is not statutory and has been designed to be used flexibly - time off timetable can be grouped together in different ways, for example, taken as whole/half days
  • £1,200+ funding per eligible teacher (see attached FAQ for regional variation)
  • Funding will be based on school workforce census returns
  • Payment will be made in arrears, in the summer term of 2022
  • DfE will ask schools to confirm that the money has been spent in the way intended. Schools should keep a record of this expenditure - such as a receipt for classroom cover, or a timetable for the NQT(s) involved

We know that this will feel like yet another thing to organise but South Farnham Educational Trust is delighted to offer all state funded schools a practical development programme for NQT+1s.

Given the disruptions NQTs have experienced during their initial teacher training and induction, as a result of the pandemic, it is imperative we invest in their learning to ensure they become the outstanding teachers of the future who thrive in the profession.

Cost: £290
