DfE funding available for early years practitioners

Further information on the new funding for training for early years practitioners

In June 2021, the government announced a £153 million investment for early years and further detail on this funding is now available.

The additional funding for early years will provide:

  • a new, universally accessible online training for practitioners
  • access to mentoring support along with bespoke whole-setting and leadership support, targeted at settings most in need
  • an early years innovation programme to share innovative practice
  • an expansion of the professional development programme for frontline practitioners, to provide national coverage
  • a review of level 3 qualifications, leading towards a reformed, evidence-based level 3 qualification
  • an expansion of training to increase the number of childminders and staff in group-based providers with an accredited level 3 SENCO qualification
  • substantially expanded numbers of places for initial teacher training in early years
  • programmes to train early years practitioners to support parents with home learning

About Early Years - Building on Success

Early Years – Building on Success is a follow on from the successful Early Years Professional Development Programme. The programme is aimed at improving practitioners' understanding and skills in supporting the development of the most disadvantaged children between the ages of 2 and 4. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the programme has been tailored to address the needs that have been heightened during this time.
