National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

NPQ Specialist Programmes - NPQLTD, NPQLBC, NPQLT, NPQLL, NPQLPM

There are five specialist NPQs allowing you to focus on a specific area of responsibility. Please click on each of the images below to view the national framework for each qualification or click the button for information.

 

NPQLTD: Leading Teacher Development

NPQLTD: Leading Teacher Development is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school. They may have responsibilities for the development of all teachers across a school or specifically trainees or teachers who are early in their career.

Delivery

All NPQs are taught through a blended balance of online individual learning, online seminars and face-to-face meetings and a simplified end-of-course assessment. There are two cohorts annually, starting in Autumn and Spring. This programme lasts for 12 months.

Assessment

The assessment process has been refreshed to reduce the workload burden on teachers while still providing an opportunity for them to apply their knowledge.

To pass an NPQ, teachers will need to engage with at least 90% of the course and complete a final assessment.

Costs

Scholarship funding to cover the full NPQ course cost will be available to teachers and leaders from: 

  • the 50% of schools with the highest proportion of students who attract pupil premium funding 
  • 16 to 19 educational settings identified as having high disadvantage 

ITT Lead Mentors will continue to be in scope for scholarship funding for the NPQ for Leading Teacher Development for the Autumn 2024 cohort. This includes ITT Lead Mentors working in non-school settings and in school settings that are not eligible for funding for other NPQs. To be eligible, the applicant must hold the role of ITT Lead Mentor and work with an accredited ITT Provider.

NPQLBC: Leading Behaviour and Culture

NPQLBC: Leading Behaviour and Culture is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading behaviour and/or supporting pupil wellbeing in their school allowing you to broaden and deepen expertise in your specialist area and create a culture in which staff and pupils thrive.

NPQLT: Leading Teaching

NPQLT: Leading Teaching is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase allowing them to build expertise in their specialist area.

Delivery

All NPQs are taught through a blended balance of online individual learning, online seminars and face-to-face meetings and a simplified end-of-course assessment. There are two cohorts annually, starting in Autumn and Spring. This programme lasts for 12 months.

NPQLL: Leading Literacy

NPQLL: Leading Literacy has been developed to aid the teaching of literacy in primary and secondary schools and support the catch-up of children whose literacy development has been impacted by the pandemic. 

The qualification is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase to improve literacy outcomes for every child. It will explore the development of literacy skills including oral language, word reading, reading comprehension, spelling, and writing composition through effective teaching and monitoring. The role of strong literacy leadership and high-quality training in primary and secondary settings, as well as managing transition between key stages and into secondary school will also be examined.

NEW SPECIALIST NPQ - LEADING PRIMARY MATHEMATICS

NPQLPM: This programme is designed to develop teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading mathematics across a school. The programme will deepen understanding of the core principles underpinning mastery approaches to teaching mathematics and extend knowledge of how children learn the subject. Participants will gain practical tools and guidance to lead a school’s approach to successfully embedding mastery approaches to mathematics.

Before applying for this NPQ, applicants should have a secure understanding of mastery approaches to teaching maths from the Teaching for Mastery programme, or an equivalent programme.
