About the Research School

Hampshire Research School is very proud to be part of the dynamic network across the country.

As a Research School, our core purpose is to:

  • share and disseminate the very best of evidence-informed practice to schools and teachers across the South of England
  • help teachers and leaders to mobilise the research evidence that is out there, into their classrooms
  • provide evidence-informed training around a range of themes
  • support schools in the region.

We are very proud to take a role in supporting a school led system as part of a dynamic network across the country. Working closely with the EEF, alongside many forward thinking schools and teachers across the UK, we will support the aim of developing an evidence based profession.

Meet the Team

Hampshire Research is led by Co-Directors, Kate Couldwell and Amanda Grant. 

Kate is the Head at Front Lawn Primary Academy and has worked there for 11 years. Amanda is the Deputy Head and has worked there for 15 years. Both Kate and Amanda lead English across a large Multi Academy Trust. Front Lawn Academy is also a Talk For Writing training centre. 

Hampshire Research School has 4 ELEs: 

  • Francesca Rodriguez who is an experienced KS2 teacher with a specialism in English
  • Zoe Lyndon who is an experienced KS1 teacher with a specialism in Early Reading
  • Charlotte Caldwell who is an experienced KS1 and LKS2 teacher with a specialism in Phonics
  • Charlotte Chessell who is an experienced KS1 teacher with a specialism in Maths.

EEF Funded Projects

The EEF are recruiting secondary schools to take part in a trial of different approaches to teaching grammar based on cognitive science principles. 

The project will explore the use of three approaches to using worked examples in English in Key Stage 3.

Pupil premium vlogs


Two videos have been designed to help those new to PP leadership or those reviewing their PP strategy.

  • Video 1 (15 minutes) – An overview of the main PP strategy and what is statutory. There is advice on what is required in the different sections of the form as well as common misconceptions to avoid.
  • Video 2 (10 minutes) – Information on the additional funding related to PP eligible students which is available for 2023/24 and can be used in relation to the National Tutoring Programme and other recovery from covid activities.

Summer training from HISP Research School

 

So far this year HISP have been running several programme partnerships across the region, including ‘Making the difference for disadvantaged pupils’, ‘Effective learning behaviours’, and ‘Supporting pupils with SEND in mainstream schools’. They have also provided input to various network meetings and provided bespoke professional development for different schools and Trusts.

HISP Research School at Thornden aims to support teachers and school leaders with the exploration of the evidence generated by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), with a strong focus on successful implementation. Over the last few months the EEF have produced several new resources.

These include:

  • A ‘Teacher feedback to improve pupil learning’ guidance report
  • A ‘Cognitive science approaches in the classroom’ report summarising the evidence for cognitive science approaches in school settings
  • An updated ‘Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Early Years’ toolkit
  • A ‘Professional Development’ guidance report

Teacher feedback to improve pupil learning

 

SEN Conference 2023

Virtual Sessions

The SEN Conference is running across the entire week commencing 27th February to 2nd March 2023.  The sessions are remote from 3.30pm -4.30pm everyday.

This course will explore and summaries the recommendations from the EEF's SEN in mainstream schools guidance report, and the Whole School SEND teacher handbook, in a science context. Over the week we will exemplify and provide an overview of strategies to use in the secondary science classroom to support pupils with SEN.

Themes will include:

  • Session 1, 27th Feb: SEN in mainstream schools EEF guidance report and what this could look like in your classroom - Steve Smith 
  • Session 2, 28th Feb: Making the most of your TA in the Classroom – Steve Smith, 
  • Session 3, 1st March: Ensuring students with Dyslexia are getting the best deal
  • Session 4: 2nd March: Ensuring students with EAL are getting the best deal
